Business Ethics in China: A Systemic Perspective

Jane Collier

Chapter Chapter 7 in Developing Business Ethics in China, 2006, pp 78-89 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract In The Blackwell Encyclopedic Dictionary of Business Ethics we read that “business ethics is the study of business action—individual or corporate—with special attention to its moral adequacy” (Werhane and Freeman 1997, 51). In that same publication we read that “business ethics in China rest upon a … heritage that emphasises personal virtue and … right ordering of personal relationships in social organization” (ibid., 72). In their focus on persons and organizations as units of analysis, these approaches regard the context of business activity as “given.” For instance, market universalism, methodological individualism, and the primacy of technology are simply taken for granted. A further set of presuppositions relate to the wider institutional context of business defined by such attributes as private property and ownership rights, open and competitive market structures and stability of contractual arrangements, as well as supportive regulatory and financial frameworks.
