Chapter Chapter 10 in Bangladesh at Fifty, 2020, pp 535-562 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The chapter deals with Bangladesh’s future perspectives. Bangladesh has shown remarkable catching-up records in recent years but many development traps remain in its future journey. The analysis highlights four major concerns: design necessary domestic policies and institutions to ensure that the benefits of economic growth are more broadly and equitably shared within society; institutionalise deliberate efforts such that Bangladesh can derive greater benefits from the catching-up process; put priority to move on technological—rather than factor-intensive mode of production—to close the development gaps; and provide more emphasis on policy coherence especially in agriculture. For the next decade, the key policy agenda is to ensure a rapid and comprehensive transition to more inclusive growth that systematically addresses problems of income inequality, gaps in key social indicators across different social groups and discriminatory institutions and norms.
