Chapter Chapter 4 in Bangladesh at Fifty, 2020, pp 171-242 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The chapter highlights on building human capabilities. Since independence, Bangladesh’s development agenda incorporates a social development lens through adopting an inter-sectoral approach and engaging with non-government and other actors in society. Human and social factors are taken as important components of Bangladesh’s development process since economic growth on its own does not guarantee a reduction in poverty and improvements in well-being of the poor. The inclusion of SDGs agenda within the policy framework has further contributed towards moving away from a technical approach for increasing human development towards an equity/inclusion approach that focuses on ‘leaving no one behind’. These developments have put an increasing emphasis on social norms and understanding of social institutions, including political analysis in the country.
