Abstract: Abstract The chapter examines social vulnerability and exclusion in Bangladesh encompassing a broad set of concerns. People may be excluded from many domains of life—social, economic, political, civil or spatial—and the relative importance of each domain depends on the local contexts. Socioeconomic disadvantages play an important role in magnifying social vulnerability and hindering social protection coverage in the country. Bangladesh has tended to broaden its social protection systems sequentially, depending on national circumstances and development priorities. Most programmes have improved the material well-being of disadvantaged groups and many have helped to break the intergenerational cycle of poverty. The analysis maintains that Bangladesh has a reasonably good foundation on which social protection can be strategically scaled up to become a key component of poverty reduction and growth.
