Chapter Chapter 12 in Westernization Movement and Early Thought of Modernization in China, 2022, pp 233-251 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The modern industry of the Qing Dynasty gradually expanded from military industry to civilian industry under the guidance of the officials of Westernization who were influenced by the direction of adopting Western learning and Western manufacturing. Chapter 4 , Part 1, has discussed the development of the military industry. This chapter will focus on the development of views regarding the Westernization of civilian industries. The thought of developing the civilian industry included the modern mining industry and modern manufacturing. The development of the mining industry could strengthen the military force of the Qing Dynasty and boost the national economy by increasing the supply of coins and job opportunities. Furthermore, the development of modern manufacturing could enhance the competitiveness of domestic products. Therefore, the preconditions of government support, regime innovation, and technology import were the key factors to affect the progress of developing the civilian industry. The officials of Westernization have proposed several thoughts to improve the process of the civilian industry.
