China’s Dual Transition: Income Growth and Transitioning Demographics
Jane Du
Chapter Chapter 3 in China's Labour Market, 1950–2050, 2024, pp 61-105 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter undertakes a comparative examination of post-war economic development and income transitions in China, as well as selected East and Southeast Asian economies. In parallel with China, both Japan and South Korea have witnessed a transformation from high post-war birth and fertility rates to low ones, culminating in overall population declines. However, a noteworthy distinction emerges when considering that Japan and South Korea transitioned into upper middle-income economies and subsequently achieved high-income status while maintaining population structures characterized by a predominant presence of young and middle-aged working individuals. China, conversely, represents a contrasting scenario in this regard.
