Chapter Chapter 4 in The Political Economy of India’s Economic Development: 5000BC to 2024AD, Volume II, 2024, pp 117-154 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter delves into the origin, ascent, reign, and expansion of the Chola Dynasty, spanning from 850AD to 1279AD, starting with Vijayalaya’s capture of Tanjavur in 850AD. It explores Parantika I and Rajaraja I’s strategic military conquests and ruling ideology blending military might with local customs. The dynasty’s contributions to trade and economic prosperity, establishing maritime links with distant regions including the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and China, and its impact on Sangam literature are highlighted. Economic models under the Chola dynasty, primarily agrarian, with the king owning land and temples playing a pivotal role in governance and economic sustenance, are explored. Temples served as hubs for trade, production, and employment, significantly contributing to economic density and capital accumulation. Despite its achievements, the Chola Dynasty faced periods of decline due to internal conflicts and external pressures, eventually succumbing to emerging powers by the late thirteenth century. The chapter also discusses the enduring impact of the dynasty’s political ideologies, economic practices, and cultural contributions on Southern India’s governance and societal structures, shaping the region’s future to this day.
