Chapter Chapter 4 in Greek Foreign Trade and Finance, 2025, pp 39-54 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This chapter discusses the relations between Greece and European Economic Community (EEC) during the two decades 1960–1980 when Greece became an Associate member of the EEC. These relations had three phases: the first, from the date when the Association Agreement became effective, in November 1962, to the military coup in April 1967 that established a military dictatorship in Greece; the second, the relations during the ‘Junta’ period, 1967–1974; and the third, the period of the restoration of democracy 1974–1980. This chapter discusses first, the content of the association agreement and the reaction of the EEC to the establishment of the dictatorship. Subsequent sections analyze economic policies and developments in the Greek economy during the 1960s and compares them to the policies and performance during the dictatorship as well as developments during the period of the restoration of democracy. The last section presents the arguments for full Community membership.
