Abstract: Abstract This chapter analyses the functions and knowledge contributions of educational establishments in learning and innovation processes. First, the formal instruction on intermediate and tertiary levels, and the new courses and specialisations that were added to the programmes, are analysed in relation to the technological changes that took place in the mining sector. Second, the availability of mining engineers and technician graduates is investigated, and third, changes in recruitment of trained workers is examined. The aims of the chapter are to assess the relevance and usefulness of the formal mining education and to show that formal mining education, and other types of formal education, were increasingly used by mining businesses and research centers.
