Latin America
Leonardo Weller
Chapter 38 in An Economist’s Guide to Economic History, 2018, pp 329-337 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Like the USA and Canada, Latin American countries were colonies of Western European empires. But despite similar European backgrounds and factor endowments, Latin America remains poorer than its northern neighbours. This chapter discusses the historical, geographic, and climatic conditions that are at the centre of the predominant theories relevant to understanding the divergence between North and Latin America.
