Chapter Chapter 3 in Global Challenges and Uncertainty in Tourism and Hospitality, Volume II, 2025, pp 53-79 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This chapter examines the experiences of people with physical impairments to identify hazards in the tourism industry. It aims to: (i) assess whether these travellers feel their expectations were fulfilled or surpassed during their trips; (ii) classify and analyse the various risks present in the tourism industry, particularly those affecting this group of travellers; and (iii) evaluate whether the risks encountered during trips influence the travellers’ future behaviour, such as their likelihood to recommend travel destinations or intentions to return. Insights were gathered from a focus group of five Portuguese travellers with physical impairments, who travelled solo globally, through structured discussions about their pre- and post-trip experiences. This research, grounded in literature, seeks to enhance travel experiences and inform policies for a more accessible and inclusive tourism industry.
