Abstract: Abstract From the early 1990s until the triggering of the financial crisis in 2007, household debt increased considerably in numerous countries. This phenomenon concerns not only real estate mortgages but also consumption loans. In addition to the best-known cases, like the United States and Great Britain, various economies of both continental Europe and Eurasia have doubled or tripled the ratio of household debt to GDP, especially since 2000.
