Abstract: Abstract The history of the Spanish banking and monetary system shows some distinctive traits, which make its study interesting. In the first place, it is a long history, and its evolution shows not a steady progression, but an alternation of booms and busts which somehow follow the ups and downs of the Spanish economy and politics.
