Chapter Chapter 16 in The Economics of Banking and Finance in Africa, 2022, pp 515-554 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This paper analyses how cross-border banking and pricing mechanisms of banks affect financial inclusion in Africa. Specifically, we first examine the effect of cross-border banking on bank pricing behaviour. The study also examines the effect of bank pricing behaviour on inclusive finance. Finally, we analyse how sensitive financial inclusion is to cross-border banking and bank pricing behaviour. We employ System GMM estimator with 330 banks across 29 countries in Africa. The findings of the study indicate that cross-border banking affect bank pricing behaviour. Also, inclusive finance can be influenced by the pricing behaviour of banks. On the sensitivity analysis, our results suggest that financial inclusion is not responsive to the interaction of cross-border banking and bank pricing mechanisms. The findings of this study have important policy implications.
