Chapter Chapter 2 in Mandatory Financial Disclosures and the Banking Sector, 2023, pp 9-21 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Given the implicit focus on markets in the literature, it is not surprising that most explanations given for the existence of voluntary and mandatory disclosures are based on market-based arguments. This book, in Chapter 3, departs from this approach and provides an alternative explanation for the existence of mandatory disclosures using information asymmetry and moral hazard that exists in all economic settings. The aim of this chapter is to provide a synopsis of the explanations provided in existing literature on voluntary and mandatory disclosure requirements and identify the gap in existing thinking on mandatory disclosure requirements that this book aims to fill.
