Chapter Chapter 3 in Bank-FinTech M&As and Banking Innovation, 2025, pp 37-53 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter examines the evolution of FinTech, with a particular focus on its stages of development, definitions, and regulatory challenges. Specifically, it explores FinTech's evolution process from early digitisation in the mid-twentieth century to the integration of digital platforms in traditional finance, and the current era of decentralised finance driven by blockchain and cryptocurrencies. This chapter critically analyses the definitions and taxonomies provided by international organisations and banking authorities, emphasising the complexity of the FinTech sector. Furthermore, it emphasises the regulatory fragmentation that characterised the FinTech industry, revealing the discrepancies that exist between different jurisdictions and the attempts to achieve a balance between innovation and stability, as well as consumer protection.
