Chapter Chapter 18 in Contemporary Issues in Banking, 2018, pp 409-426 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Shadow banking is a very important issue in contemporary finance. It still remains the unregulated part of the financial market and may generate a major systemic risk in the future. An example of such a rapidly growing shadow banking system in the wake of the last financial crisis is that of China. It is hence necessary to attach greater importance to its development. The system differs vastly from its counterparts in Western countries. This chapter describes the structure of Chinese shadow banking and the mechanisms of its development, along with the main differences between the system in China and in Western countries. It also presents the main inherited risks present in the system and their potential impact on other sectors of the Chinese economy and financial market and hence on the global economy.
