Chapter 1 in Sustainable Agricultural Development, 2020, pp 1-8 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This book aims to help the reader understand the key role agriculture plays in sustainable development and provides an economic perspective on how we can understand, evaluate, and improve the sustainability of the diverse agricultural systems around the world. Our economic perspective is derived from the complexity of agricultural systems at local to global scales. This complexity means that there are inevitable tradeoffs among the economic, environmental, and social dimensions of sustainability. Examples from developing and industrialized countries illustrate how new data and computational tools are being used to design and implement more sustainable development pathways.
