Abstract: Abstract We begin this chapter with the conventional view of economic growth as the driver of economic and social development, and the central role that agriculture plays in the growth process. Increasing human dominance of global ecosystems and subsequent environmental social challenges motivate the concept of sustainable development. We discuss sustainable development as both a conceptual framework for understanding economic, environmental, and social changes and a normative framework for setting goals. We describe the three principal dimensions of sustainable development—economic, environmental, and social—and the important role that agriculture plays in each. Finally, we introduce the concept of Tradeoff Analysis as a way to combine the positive and normative approaches.
