Abstract: Abstract Humans have been making ethanol from grains for thousands of years. This chapter traces the evolution of US policy on ethanol/biofuels from the early republic to today, reviews the current state of the industry, and concludes with a brief discussion of biodiesel and other biofuels derived from feedstocks other than corn. Emphasis is placed on the policy developments of the mid-1970s following the spike in crude oil prices through the development of the renewable fuels standard (RFS) in 2005 and 2007 and the impact of the RFS on current policy discussion.
