Chapter 9 in Business for Sustainability, Volume I, 2023, pp 179-200 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Infrastructure plays a crucial role in the advancement of sustainable development. The concept of ‘sustainable infrastructure’ (SI) has been put forward by scholars and professionals; however, further reflection is needed. By adopting a company-centric perspective, this chapter provides evidence of how the notion is conceived by ‘Big Players’ in the construction industry by means of a content analysis of corporate reports. Findings suggest that SI is largely anchored to the early phases of a project’s lifecycle. ‘Green’ aspects of SI are commonly recognised—in line with a prevailing use of environmental assessment criteria—but the emphasis placed on other sustainability issues and the broadness of stakeholders addressed vary considerably across companies. This supports that SI is a still fragmented and lively concept.
