Chapter Chapter 1 in Non-Profit Organisations, Volume IV, 2024, pp 1-27 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Non-profit entities are described as social institutions that do not operate for profit but instead focus on fostering social well-being and meeting needs that for-profit organizations may be unable to provide. The growth of technology appears to have an impact on their operation, however not to the extent expected by institutions dealing with philanthropy and donations. Meanwhile, the public sector appears to be more open to new technologies. However, some tendencies appear to be shared by both sectors. This systematic review synthesizes a diverse array of articles, providing a nuanced understanding of non-profit organizations in the digital age. By dissecting their characteristics, operational dynamics, and responses to technological advancements, this review contributes to both theoretical foundations and practical implications, paving the way for continued exploration and innovation in this evolving field. Some of the gaps arising in the literature concern the nuanced impact of artificial intelligence on specific types of non-profit organizations, the role of technology in fostering collaboration among non-profits, and the ethical considerations associated with technological integration in the sector.
