Historical Origins of the International Monetary Fund
Richard F. Kahn
Chapter Chapter 10 in Richard F. Kahn, 2022, pp 191-222 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter, originally published in 1976, Kahn offers a vivid reconstruction of the genesis of the IMF and of Keynes’s tireless effort to reach a compromise between the British and the US delegations. Kahn devotes particular attention to the different interest groups that were part of that process and to Keynes’s strategies to withstand them in his attempt to secure a reasonable deal having in mind the mutual interest of creditor and debtor countries. The chapter is both a generous tribute to Keynes’s intelligence, determination and optimism and an inside account of the British position in a crucial negotiation for the reorganization of the international economy after World War II.
