The Problem of Duopoly
Richard F. Kahn
Chapter Chapter 3 in Richard F. Kahn, 2022, pp 51-70 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Originally published in the Economic Journal in 1937, this article is a classic on the subject. The question discussed here is when, depending on the effects on its sales—which in turn depend on the reactions of competing firms—it pays a firm to raise or to lower its price. Without any mathematical tools, Kahn goes through the whole complicated discussion on the effects of the actions of one duopolist on the behaviour of the other, and thus the role of the strategies implicit in every move of each firm, anticipating the later development in the theories of oligopoly.
