Chapter Chapter 5 in Joan Robinson in Princely India, 2022, pp 45-54 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Before 1988, no substantive information existed about the economic work that the Robinsons were doing in the Princely India. Their work was published in 1929, the year following the Robinsons returned to England, in book form with the title, The British Crown and the Indian States. The Robinsons as well as the economics profession were unaware of it. After 1929, the book went out of print. Joan Robinson died in 1983. None of her extensive writings ever mentioned it. Her archival collections at King’s College are also silent in this regard. Of course, Sir Austin came to know of the book after the submission of my dissertation in 1988 and claimed authorship of parts of it. But his archival collections at the Marshall Library, Cambridge, also contain no reference to the printed book. There are, however, material and references available in these archives about the work of the Robinsons during their time in Princely India. In 1988, when I submitted my dissertation, this collection was not available.
