Abstract: Abstract This chapter traces the intellectual history of charity from ancient times to modernity and beyond. The chapter examines the opinions on charity that existed in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt, the Greek city-states, ancient China and the Hindu texts, the Old and New Testaments, the philosophers of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, and the classical and neoclassical economists. The chapter highlights the great transformation that occurred over time in the intellectual view of charity, and its implications with respect to poverty in society.
