Chapter Chapter 1 in A New Balance of Payments for the United States, 1790–1919, 2021, pp 3-23 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The balance-of-payments table as a statistical construct is explained. A comprehensive review of existing balance-of-payments tables covering the years 1790–1939 is presented. The official balance of payments begins in 1919. All earlier tables are generated either by private authors or within the federal government on an ad hoc basis. For the 1790–1918 period, the currently standard table—in Historical Statistics of the United States—was completed in 1960. That table is replete with deficiencies, to be corrected.
