Chapter Chapter 6 in A New Balance of Payments for the United States, 1790–1919, 2021, pp 115-131 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Conventional merchandise exports begin with the official series as modified by previous authors. The contribution here involves steps of subtraction and of addition. Ships sales (to be considered separately) are deleted from the official data, and legal overvaluation of re-exports is removed. Valuation concept is f.o.b. Additions are overland exports, and correction is made for both general underreporting of exports and undervaluation of overland exports to Canada.
