Chapter Chapter 4 in Financing Nature-Based Solutions, 2022, pp 51-73 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract With the world facing a climate crisis and rapid biodiversity loss, debt-restructuring could make around $20 billion available to invest in the environment. This chapter will first introduce debt swaps before discussing the concept of a debt-for-nature swap (DFN). The chapter will then review bilateral swaps versus swaps through intermediaries, followed by a discussion on establishing a conservation trust fund. Finally, the chapter will summarise the benefits of DFNs, the conditions for achieving value, and the monitoring and evaluation of these swaps.
