Integrating Serbia into the EU

Chapter 8 in Serbia’s Transition, 2010, pp 216-248 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The transition in Serbia has also been slowed down by the exceptionally unfavourable international conditions that have prevailed during most of the last 20 years. Some of the problems are specific to Serbia, while others are common to all countries in the region of SEE. The process of Serbia’s economic and political integration with the EU therefore needs to be analysed within the broader context of EU policies towards the whole SEE region. In EU terminology, the SEE region is usually referred to as the ‘Western Balkans’, which until 2006 comprised five states: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYR Macedonia), and FR Yugoslavia (Serbia, Montenegro, and Kosovo), although its wider definition also includes Bulgaria and Romania.
