Problems of the Welfare State and the New German Länder

Chapter 7 in East Germany’s Economic Development since Unification, 1998, pp 109-119 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract It is the aim of this chapter to analyse the relationship between economics as a social science — its value judgements both implicit and explicit — and many of the socio-economic problems that most industrialised western liberal democracies are experiencing, for example unemployment, uncertainty, low growth, diminishing public sector provision, and so on, applied to the European social model. Seemingly we are told that the State cannot take the burden of the Welfare State and that individuals must make provision for their own futures. According to this argument Germany should follow this prescription. It is our intention to throw doubt on this proposition.
