Hardiness and Depression Among Secondary School Teachers

Abstract: Hardiness is a personality trait that allows an individual to better cope with stressful situations and allows them opportunity for personal growth. Individuals with high levels of hardiness better cope with stress at work, which is reflected in the less pronounced depression. The research was conducted to gain insight into prevalence of depression among secondary school teachers and whether there is a link between hardiness and depression. The sample consisted of 240 teachers employed in secondary schools in Slovenia. The results showed that the constructs of hardiness and depression are positively related. Hardiness construct is a protective factor at work that can prevent problems associated with depressed mood.
