CANTONAL BUSINESS STRUCTURE IN COSTA RICA: OLD AND NEW ECONOMY, GENDER, INFORMALITY AND ICT ACCESS ANALYSIS

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to build a model for the classification of the 81 cantones of Costa Rica according to the structure of their economic activity, measure through the commercial license (Municipal Patent), which are the legal mechanism for a SME´s to exercise a lucrative activity in each respective canton. The research looks into the structure of each canton and their respective commercial license and develop a cluster analysis and a descriptive analysis to contrast one possible conceptual classification of the cantones. Key findings were able to confirm the structure of three different types of classification for each canton. This study contributes to the analysis of the behavior of the SME´s in each canton and helps to demonstrate that the economic activity can be classified into, new activities, traditional activities and ICT access.
