Abstract: High-speed rail (HSR) development has been recognized as an important policy tool for regional development around the world, notably in Asia and Europe. However, the introduction, development, and evolution of HSR have also attracted debate on complex issues, such as project appraisal, the wider economic benefits for regional and national development, the quality of life impacts on society, cohesion and social equity concerns, and the diversity of the challenges faced during execution. While transport corridors have led to substantial benefits in many countries and regions, there have also been cases resulting in HSR patchworks rather than networks. This book encompasses comprehensive discussions and insights into the prevalent frontiers in HSR development, drawing on global cases and past experiences. Its objectives are to analyze and enhance the current state of understanding of HSR for policy making and expand its frontiers for future projects. Frontiers in High-Speed Rail Development is organized in six parts and offers readers stimulating ideas and new perspectives that will advance their knowledge of HSR development and planning.
