Abstract:
This primer starts with a brief discussion on the state of agriculture in Singapore and its modest contribution to the country's economy. This is followed by a discussion on how the agriculture environment in Singapore has changed over the last two decades, and the corresponding structural and policy changes that were put in place to keep pace with the changes. The primer also describes the country's attempt to develop its farming industry, with focus on commodities, which can be farmed in its environment, and the strategies employed to sustain the industry. Major agriculture and trade agencies and their functional areas are featured towards the latter portion of the primer. This series targets a wide range of readership, including policymakers and legislators, researchers, students, program practitioners, donor agencies, the business community, and the media.
