Abstract: Abstract This paper seeks to document practices on sustainable peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). DRC 2018 elections, followed by a peaceful transition of power with President-elect Felix Tshisekedi, are the result of several factors, including a deal with the outgoing President Joseph Kabila. It goes without saying that among these factors, pacification efforts by several other actors played an invisible but significant role. And nowhere is that more evident than in how Counterpart International worked with national stakeholders to build, strengthen, and sustain nationally owned and driven efforts to prevent violent conflicts and build a just and peaceful society. In the context of DRC, the insider mediation approach was used in combination with peace-focused youth activities such as Momekano (Young Democrats Duel for Peace), Bilili (Drawing for Democracy and Peace), and Maboke (Peace Skit Contest). Other methods were the Center for Monitoring and Analysis of Electoral Conflicts in Congo—CMACC’s early warning system, consistent peace messaging by peace mediators and voter educators in at-risk communities, and radio programming conveying peace messages and elements of nonviolent civic participation. Through these various approaches, Counterpart International made a valuable contribution to the sustainment of a peaceful climate around the electoral process.
