Abstract: Abstract This article explores the opportunities for and constraints of women empowerment in the South African Gauteng Province. This article posits that, although the number of women involved in agribusiness has increased in South Africa and the Gauteng Province, women empowerment in terms of resource control and participation in decision-making in the agribusiness is still a real problem. The article is guided by the Longwe framework. Utilising interviews, secondary sources, and observations, the article reveals that lack of funds, education and training, criminality, technological challenges, research and innovation, and lack of transformation are some of the key barriers to women’s empowerment within agribusiness. In dealing with these challenges, this article recommends the deployment of sustainable livelihoods framework-based interventions as part of the collective and continued effort to realize women’s empowerment in the agribusiness in the province.
