A chapter in Perspectives on the Legislature and the Prospects of Accountability in Nigeria and South Africa, 2019, pp 85-104 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter is broadly concerned with the current state of the executive-legislature relationship and the promotion of accountability and transparency in South Africa. The doctrine of separation of powers between the legislature, the executive, and the judicial branches embraced by many presidential systems, is entrenched in the SA Constitution of 1996. Constitutional Principle VI in the 4th Schedule to the Interim Constitution of South Africa 1993 states: ‘There shall be a separation of powers between the legislature, executive and judiciary, with appropriate checks and balances to ensure accountability, responsiveness and openness’.
