A chapter in Proceedings of the International Conference on Marching Beyond the Libraries: Talent, Technology, and Transformation (ICMBL 2025), 2026, pp 152-160 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Digital transformation has emerged as a critical priority for modern libraries, reshaping traditional service models into intelligent and technology-driven service environments. This study aims to analyze the major trends, challenges, and strategic directions influencing the digital transformation of library services. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted using the PRISMA 2020 protocol, and 25 peer-reviewed research articles published between 2020 and 2025 were systematically screened and selected from the Web of Science database for final analysis. The review reveals that libraries are increasingly adopting cloud infrastructure, AI-enabled services, digital repositories, virtual reference systems, and mobile-based access to enhance automation, accessibility, and user engagement. However, the findings also indicate persistent challenges such as infrastructure gaps, financial limitations, digital skill deficiencies, cybersecurity threats, and organizational resistance to change. Strategic approaches including policy-driven digital planning, open-source adoption, capacity-building initiatives, consortia collaboration, and inclusive service models are identified as key future directions. This review concludes that achieving sustainable and user-centric digital transformation requires libraries to move beyond technology adoption toward strategic digital maturity, governance, and equity-focused innovation.
