Abstract: Abstract Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing and reshaping many industries and professions, accounting is of no exception. A significant concern for the accounting professionals is the threat of job displacement as a result of AI. Nevertheless, there are opportunities for new roles in the AI driven world. However, professionals need to continuously upskill, adapt and engage in lifelong learning to embrace these changes. This will help them to stay relevant in their careers and to make the most of the opportunities that AI presents. Following the Theory of Human Capital Development, this study proposes in order to keep abreast with the latest technological advancement, accounting professionals need to have a digital mindset, equip themselves with relevant digital skills and familiarize with human-machine teaming to enhance job performance. Upskilling and retraining are crucial in the digitalized era. Accounting professionals can leverage AI capabilities to automate routine and repetitive tasks so that accounting professionals can focus their time and energy on more high-value tasks such as analysis, reporting and strategic decision making. It is recommended that future research be conducted to further test and evaluate the relationship of higher order thinking and job performance of accounting professionals.
