Abstract:
Abstract The literature review critically examines the role of pastoral tourism in achieving Sustainable Development Goals among pastoral communities to identify the gaps hindering pastoral tourism from acting as a catalyst for sustainable livelihoods and achieving SDGs among pastoralists. Further recommendations are given for designing and managing pastoral tourism to foster economic resilience, biodiversity preservation, and social empowerment among pastoral communities. A total of 50 papers published between 2003 and 2024 were screened initially. Out of these 44 papers were included in the review, while 6 papers were excluded due to exclusion criteria. Major gaps are limited infrastructural development, complex models of governance, uneven benefits distribution, misrepresentation, and marginalization along with the exacerbating environmental challenges. The findings suggest that future developments of pastoral tourism should focus on policy inclusion and implementation, community involvement in decision-making, equitable benefits sharing, and adaptation of tourism to the climatic variability of marginal and fragile ecosystems.
