Abstract: Abstract On January 13, 2023, the Japanese government announced nuclear-contaminated water discharge policy, which aroused consumers’ concerns about the safety of seafood products. From an ESG perspective, this article explores the impact of the announcement of this policy on consumption. This article uses multiple regression and takes policy shock as the core explanatory variable to explore the influencing factors of sales changes. Although the announcement of the policy did not affect seafood products quality, We found that the Japanese government’s actions violated ESG standards, damaging the reputation of seafood products and resulting in a decline in consumers’ willingness to purchase them.
