A Thematic Analysis of the Factors Influencing Online Learning for Resident Doctors in China Post Pandemic

Abstract: Abstract During the COVID-19 pandemic, higher education, including medical education, faced unprecedented challenges, leading to the rapid adoption of online learning methods. In China, medical institutions like the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University have embraced online learning for postgraduate medical education. However, the implementation remains in its infancy, facing challenges such as limited resources, uneven progress, and a lack of effective governance. This study aims to explore the factors influencing online learning for resident doctors at the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University. A qualitative research approach involved in-depth interviews with 15 participants, including hospital administrators, teaching physicians, and resident doctors. The data were analysed using thematic analysis of NVivo software. The results revealed key issues affecting online learning, such as unstable internet connections, insufficient funding, low instructor recognition, and resident doctors’ lack of focus on individual learning abilities, teaching quality, and infrastructure. To address these challenges, the study recommends implementing a blended learning model, enhancing curriculum quality, refining training modes for resident doctors, increasing institutional support, and securing government backing for sustainable improvement.
