The Analysis of Knowledge, Awareness and Disaster Experience on Youth Disaster Preparedness in Selangor Malaysia

Abstract: Abstract Climate changes resulted from both uncertain complex natural climate variability and human actions has exacerbated the disaster scenario in Malaysia. Despite frequent disaster occurrences and the issue become the centre of discussion among the policy makers and the public at large, there were still limited research that explore the social and policy dimension of disaster preparedness, let alone research that give attention to youth. Therefore, this study aims to examine the correlation of awareness and knowledge with disaster preparedness and to ascertain the moderating influence of disaster experience among 381 youth respondents in Selangor, Malaysia using a survey. The study found a significant relationship between awareness and knowledge with disaster preparedness. Meanwhile, disaster experience has no moderating influence on awareness but has influence on knowledge with disaster preparedness. This study suggests that efforts in enhancing and maintaining a high degree of disaster preparedness are indeed a continuous quest and should be done consistently through vigorous awareness campaigns on various channels. Moreover, instilling the knowledge of preparedness at every educational level is central to building generation that could manage disaster effectively.
