Abstract:
Abstract The integration of sustainability into healthcare supply chains is critical for mitigating the sector’s environmental impact while ensuring operational resilience and social equity. This literature review synthesizes contemporary research on sustainable practices in hospital supply chains. This review underscores the need for context-sensitive, equity-centered approaches that integrate qualitative insights from healthcare administrators, policymakers, and communities to design actionable sustainability roadmaps., the review examines how economic, environmental, and social objectives are balanced in healthcare procurement, logistics, and waste management. Key findings highlight the role of green procurement in reducing costs and emissions, the potential of CE strategies like medical device reprocessing to minimize waste, and the importance of stakeholder partnerships in overcoming institutional and financial barriers. However, challenges persist, particularly in low-resource settings, where budget constraints, power imbalances with suppliers, and clinician resistance hinder progress. The review underscores the need for context-sensitive strategies that prioritize equity, foster multi-stakeholder collaboration, and leverage technology to align healthcare operations with planetary health goals. By contextualizing these insights within the Grand Agadir regional healthcare network, this work provides a foundation for advancing sustainable healthcare supply chains in emerging economies.
