Abstract:
Abstract The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) is transforming global logistics by integrating smart technologies that promote sustainability, efficiency, and resilience. This paper synthesises how 4IR technologies—namely the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, big data analytics, robotics, autonomous vehicles, and digital twins—converge to create a sustainable logistics ecosystem. Drawing on peer-reviewed literature and industry reports published between 2019 and 2025, a narrative review approach identifies seven technology domains that drive green logistics transformation. IoT and real-time visibility systems enable emissions monitoring and operational transparency. AI and big data support demand forecasting, route optimisation, and energy management. Blockchain fosters supply-chain traceability, while robotics and automation enhance warehouse efficiency and resource utilisation. Autonomous vehicles and drones contribute to cleaner last-mile delivery, and digital twins allow virtual testing of carbon-reduction strategies. Cloud-based platforms integrate these technologies to enhance data exchange and coordination. The findings reveal that sustainability and efficiency are mutually reinforcing, although barriers persist in cost, interoperability, cybersecurity, and workforce readiness. The study proposes a holistic integration framework illustrating how 4IR technologies interact with logistics functions—procurement, transportation, warehousing, and distribution—to achieve sustainable outcomes. The paper concludes that adopting 4IR technologies through phased investment and strong governance will be essential for realising low-carbon, intelligent logistics systems in the 21st century.
