Abstract:
Abstract The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into teaching and learning (T&L) has accelerated recently, reflecting both technological advancements and recognition of AI’s potential to transform learning experiences. Despite its widespread adoption, there is still a limited critical discussion of its ethical, pedagogical, and institutional implications. This paper aims to review the literature on the role of AI in shaping T&L in higher education, with attention to strategies, challenges, and future directions. The literature highlights contributions of AI, such as personalized learning, improved evaluation and assessment practices, and enhanced student interaction and engagement. However, it also reveals challenges related to ethics, equity, data protection, and the risk of over-reliance on technology. The integration of AI into higher education represents an evolving yet promising trajectory. To realize its potential, higher education institutions must balance innovation with ethics and evaluation of long-term impacts on teaching pedagogy and student experience.
