Chapter Chapter 11 in Mechanisms for Long-Term Innovation, 2022, pp 211-242 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter, we focus on the role of the “initial markets”. The emergence of commercial markets played a role in supporting business continuity by raising expectations of future market expansion. Of particular importance was the emergence of ultra-pure water production applications for semiconductors. This market cropped up like an amazing miracle in the late 1970s, when the miniaturization of semiconductors was advancing and high cleanliness was required in the manufacturing process. The market made it possible for the companies to continue development and led to the establishment of technology that could be applied to seawater desalination.
