Chapter Chapter 8 in Mechanisms for Long-Term Innovation, 2022, pp 131-153 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter, we describe the history of development and commercialization of the RO membrane at Toyobo. Toyobo started RO membrane development with the aim to create new business opportunities utilizing its fiber technology amid the stagnation of its mainstay fiber business. Unlike many other companies that developed polyamide-based flat-type membranes, Toyobo adopted cellulose acetate-based hollow-fiber membranes and established a unique position in the Middle Eastern market. We also clarify how its RO membrane business and development were sustained under the extremely difficult business state of the company.
