Chapter Chapter 3 in Western Multinational Corporations in Latin America, 2022, pp 33-103 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter discusses in depth the constituent elements of the MNC–developing country nexus one by one. First, the nature and organizational peculiarities of the MNC as a unique actor physically present in various capitalist systems at the same time are discussed. Second, different modes of economic organization in the MNCs’ home and host countries are discussed shedding light on institutional diversity, behavioral variety, and different systemic functioning. As such, the Varieties of Capitalism approach is introduced most prominently and further developed by, above all, extending the theoretical discussion on the “Global South” placing particular emphasis on the Latin American hierarchical market economy. Analytical advancements make it possible, among other things, to approach developmental distortions through firm-centered institutional analysis and provide a solid diagnosis of the institutional status quo.
